Our Beliefs

At FUMC Denton, we are a church that is passionate about shining God’s love into every life. We are a welcoming community of faith that believes there is a place for everyone here—including you. We cherish the the diversity of humanity and we welcome and affirm people of every age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, economic circumstance, marital status, creed, culture, and language. We are a church that relies on God’s grace and believes that the love of Christ compels us to care for our neighbors. We believe in feeding the homeless, repairing the homes of those in need, mentoring local students, and bringing God’s love to the places in our community and in our world that need it the most. We believe that everyone is a child of God and we strive to have open hearts, open minds, and open doors to God and to each other.

We Are United Methodists

The United Methodist Church is known for our emphasis on a personal faith, lived out in concrete ways in the world. We value well-informed and passionate preaching, inspired worship, caring for our neighbors, and small groups where people grow in faith. We strive to uphold truths found in the stories of the Bible, while at the same time appreciating intellect, lived experience, and modern science as guides for faith and practice. Methodists have a passionate faith with strong convictions, but we also recognize that the world is not always black and white. We are willing to ask questions, to wrestle with difficult issues and to do so with grace and compassion. Methodists seek to have open hearts and open minds—and welcome anyone interested in learning more about the Christian faith. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our History

Not long after the city of Denton became a reality in 1856, a Methodist minister organized the earliest congregation making Methodism in Denton as old as the city itself. From this humble beginning until 1976, this congregation called three different buildings “home.” Then, church trustees commissioned a special study group to decide what to do about deteriorating buildings and the needs of a growing congregation. They decided to continue to serve God and the community from our downtown location. They renovated the buildings and erected a multi-purpose building to provide space for recreational and social activities.

The trustees oversaw a total renovation of the Sanctuary again in 1991 and installation of new stained glass windows. Six years later, the first live telecast of the worship service debuted on Christmas Eve. The next year saw the installation of a new pipe organ. In 2006, the East Wing construction accommodated the dynamic growth of the children’s ministry. The daycare program expanded to full-time in 2007 to serve the entire Denton Community.

At the end of 2015, the renovated Monroe Fellowship Building re-opened and began hosting the Mosaic contemporary worship service, ou Hispanic congregation, and our FunStop after school program. In 2017, the modern Open Worship service began in a refurbished Flinn Hall.

Now, after over 150 years at the same location, our church continues to reach out to our community by providing multiple worship opportunities, services to the homeless, adoption of a local elementary school, after-school care, new outreach initiatives to young adults and our burgeoning downtown community.
