Together We Dine

Great things were happening in Miller Center on Sunday afternoon! That’s when we hosted a diverse group of approximately 75 Denton community members for Together We Dine. This dinner brought total strangers together to share a meal and engage in courageous, safe conversations about race relations.

Rev. Don Lee greeted the group and offered grace for our meal. Charlene Edwards from Project Unity and her helpers got us all set up and ready to go and Rev. Richie Butler from St. Luke Community UMC in Dallas addressed the group and encouraged us in the work of dismantling racism. He told us that participating in Together We Dine is one way to combat racism, so we were all eager to share with and listen to each other.

Many members of our church along with a number of people from the Denton community were there. We took time to talk about our experiences, and listen to the stories of the other diners. Each of the 8 tables of 9 people engaged in healthy and structured dialogue led by a facilitator.

Because we were able to discuss our experiences and perspectives over dinner, we believe that this experience proved that those things that unite us are greater than those that divides us.

The program was created by Project Unity and is their first event in Denton. As the energized and enthusiastic participants were leaving at the end of the dine, many were talking about when the next one would be scheduled and who they wanted to invite!

We are planning to have many more Together We Dine events and hope you’ll come. All are welcome here!
