Credo Choir
“Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God,
which should come into the world.”
John 11:27
Duane Cottrell will be taking over the reigns of the group starting in the fall. He’s currently finishing up a Master’s
Degree in choral conducting from UNT and will begin his doctoral studies soon. Duane has had significant work experience
in churches both as a musician and a pastor. He also taught in the San Antonio ISD for 2 years. Duane brings a wealth of
knowledge and skill to the position. We are all looking forward to him coming on-board in August.
First UMC has an incredible music program exhibiting a wealth of talent. And the youth are no different. CREDO is the youth
choir for grades 7-12. They are a vital part of the music and youth ministry in the church. Regular rehearsals are Sundays
at 4:30 pm in Flinn Hall.
The Latin word for “I believe,” CREDO was founded during the 1968-69 school year. CREDO is an emphatic declaration of the
faith that the members, both individually and collectively, strive to affirm. This faith is symbolized by the Cross of Christ
and the Circle of Eternal Peace which is CREDO’s logo.
CREDO was formed for a two-fold purpose, to serve the needs and foster the talents of the youth, and to offer the youth
an opportunity to serve others through their talents.
The traditional processional for the choir is Carl Schalk’s “O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High.” In the spring, CREDO
holds its talent show, participates in all Easter services, including sunrise, and sings for worship on Senior Sunday. The
first CREDO tour was to San Antonio in May of 1969. They have since traveled to Colorado, Washington D.C., and many other
destinations.
CREDO celebrates anniversaries every ten years. Each reunion invites all the directors and singers from over the years to
return to enjoy song and fellowship together.
