Fine Arts Academy
At the First United Methodist Church Fine Arts Academy we believe the arts are a gift from God that gives us—those who bear His image—a means to worship and glorify the Creator. We also believe the arts help us to explore God and His creation—its inherent beauty and its current brokenness.
Our teaching perspective is unique in that we purposefully and deliberately infuse our teaching with the Christian faith. This does not necessarily mean that you will learn your chosen arts discipline any better or any differently. What it does mean is that, as you learn, you will come to understand what it means to glorify God through the arts. Our hope and prayer is that from this perspective, we can enable our students to use their creativity to bring healing, justice and restoration to a beautiful but broken world.
We are currently offering private instruction for the following:
- Bass Guitar
- French Horn
We are now offering Music Therapy. “Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. Music therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.
-American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Both individaual and group sessions are offered: Monday- Thursday, from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Click here for more information.
Starting on Fall 2017, we will offer Creative Writing classes. Creative Writing is a way of helping people express themselves through the written word. As image-bearers of a Creator God, we can use our creativity to explore the human experience and bring glory to the ultimate Creator. Through writing, we get our thoughts out onto a computer screen or paper, exploring our spiritual and emotional thoughts and feelings. Click here for details.
Future offerings include: dance (ballet, tap, lyrical, etc.), drama/theatre, music theory, drawing, painting, creative writing, poetry and other arts disciplines. Click here for information on tuition and policies. Click here to enroll.
Every year during summer the Academy also offers a choir camp. The camp is for children entering Grades 1-6 the following fall. In addition to learning several songs in preparation for an end-of-week recording session and live performance, campers will also learn more about music through movement, listening and interactive activities. Optional afternoon enrichment activities will be also available. Click here to check on the 2017 camp.
All teachers and staff at The Academy are highly trained and capable instructors, having demonstrated mastery of their individual instrument/discipline through one or more of the following criteria: higher education (bachelors degree or higher), past teaching experience (proven private studio), ability on their instrument (regular public performance).
In addition to fully embracing the mission of The Academy, all teachers have undergone extensive background checks and MinistrySafe training.
The 2017 academic year begins on August 21 . Lessons are taught Monday through Thursday of each week and can be scheduled anytime during the day or evening through 8:00pm. Lesson times are determined based upon open time slots and teacher availability. Click here for the 2017-2018 calendar. Please contact the Academy Director for more information.
Lessons are taught at the First United Methodist Church located at 201 S. Locust Street in downtown Denton, Texas. This safe and neutral environment provides a space that eliminates distractions and allows for a focused and productive lesson.
Scholarships are available to select students who demonstrate financial need, artistic ability and dedication to instruction. The amount of scholarship will be determined on an individual basis and will require some level of financial commitment from the student.
Academy students have opportunities to demonstrate their progress through recitals, special events and participation in worship. We encourage our students to share their talent with others as a way to bring joy and healing to the world around us. Our recitals are free and open to the public. Please check the calendar to the right for recital dates.
