How to Join FUMC

At First UMC-Denton, in making disciples of Jesus Christ, we strive to share and shine God’s love as a Christ-centered church, where every member is a minister.

How To Join

If you would like to explore becoming a part of this church family, please contact one of our pastors express your desire so that the pastor might guide you in those next steps through our Methodism 101 class.

As a church open to offering unique opportunities in ministry and service, new members are always welcome. Typically, those joining let us know a little bit about their background by indicating how they will be joining:

  1. Profession of Faith/Baptism –
    A person making a first time commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and to His church.
  2. Transfer of Membership from another denomination –
    A person joining First United Methodist from another faith tradition.
  3. Transfer from another United Methodist Church –
    A person coming to First UMC-Denton from another United Methodist Church.

Methodism 101

Methodism 101 is an overview of the United Methodist Church and what it means to be a United Methodist, especially at First United Methodist Church, Denton. The 6 one-hour sessions cover the following topics:

  • The once and future church, a glimpse into the path the church is on into the future and a look at the foundation from Old Testament times through Pentecost, the Reformation and the branching of denominations.
  • The beginnings of Methodism from the English Reformation through the life and work of John and Charles Wesley in England and frontier America.
  • The doctrine and beliefs of United Methodist today.
  • Social Holiness and Personal Holiness—two parts of the whole.
  • The Polity of the United Methodist Church—how we govern ourselves, and what it means to be a connectional church.
  • Being a servant minister—living out your faith through the community called First United Methodist Church, Denton.

This course is recommended for all people coming into our congregation whether by profession of faith and baptism, renewal of vows, or transfer of membership. It is also a good refresher course for long-time members who want to remember who we are and where we came from as a denomination.

This course if offered at various times throughout the year, sometimes on Sunday morning at either 8:30 or 9:45; sometimes on a weeknight of Sunday evening with 3 two-hour sessions. You are invited to be a part of this class at a time convenient for you.
